Heritage tiles making a comeback? New Homes Magazine April 2022

Victorian, Heritage and Federation Tiles are BACK!
With over 40 years of experience in the tiling industry, owner of Muldoon Tiles Colin Mulcaster has noted some recent trends back to heritage styled tiles and the different considerations when deciding on final looks and materials.
Mr Mulcaster said he has seen a trend swinging back to heritage-style tiles with bright colours and patterns.
“We’re seeing a lot of architects come in for heritage tiles for verandah and pathway entrances into a home.”
“These tiles are perfect for an older style home.”
With patterned tiles making its way back to popularity – Mr Mulcaster said Muldoon Tiles, situated in Kewdale, can custom design patterns for a look which is unique to the home, with customers having the ability to draw inspiration from different styles and colours.
“For example, if you went for tessellated tiles of one of the Victorian designs and you don’t necessarily like the Liverpool look or the London look but would to combine the two, we can actually custom make a pattern for your home.”
Proving that tiles live beyond the kitchen and bathroom areas, Mr Mulcaster noted another growing choice is the use of timber-looking tiles, giving the impression of timber floors without the up-keep.
“People are putting them into their living room now, because you can actually get tiles that look like wood and they work incredibly well for heated flooring.”
Using tiled flooring in outdoor areas is another way to transform the look and feel of the backyard space and highlight a particular design style.
“The Art-deco and Edwardian style of tiles are incredible around the pool, and it gives that sophisticated 1930s vintage theme,” Mr Mulcaster said.
However, when it comes to picking tiles, choosing the right texture is important when picking tiles, especially around pool areas.
